Oscar Justice

The Academy Awards have just ended, and I admit I watched only because Chris Rock was hosting.  For the most part, I see most major awards shows as ass-kissing festivals where people talk about each others' genious and try not to spill food on their designer clothing.  Needless to say, I don't think I am the target audience for the Oscars.

HOWEVER, I must say that I am happy about two things.

First of all, my favorite movie of the year, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind actually won the award for best original screenplay.  For me, this one was a no-brainer, and I was prepared to write a rant had it not won.  If you haven't seen this movie, please do yourself a favor and buy it on DVD.

Second, I was pleased to see that Sideways hardly won anything.  I admit I have not seen it, but the previews and the press have told me all I need to know.  Say what you will about this movie, but nothing says "yuppie" to me more than two middle-aged guys "on a soul-searching trek through wine country."  I don't know why this movie bothers me so much, maybe it's the fact that it got such great reviews, and I know the movie can't possibly live up to the hype.  I guess I have never been a fan of popular things... I never saw Titanic, either.
