By 2 weeks Zuzu had been to the doctor three times: twice for a weight check and then again for her two-week baby check-up. While in the hospital she lost more weight than they like to see – she was 6 lbs, 12 oz at birth and because she had issues, she didn’t really start eating for a while. They were trying to tell me that I would have to supplement with formula. But if she wasn’t breast-feeding I didn’t see how she was going to eat from a bottle either. Anyway, upon discharge at 6 pm, she weighed 6 lbs 5 oz and they insisted that we come back in the next morning to check her weight again. She was 6 lbs, 3 oz, so we had to come back again three days later. During that time she finally started eating well – I kept saying “we’ll show these doctors what we can do”. So at her appointment, she weighed 6 lbs 10oz!
At her two-week check, they confirmed that she had a belly button hernia as well as a little hernia above her belly button, neither of which they were too concerned about. Her stump had fallen off the day before and it started bleeding a little that morning – it was kind of gross and it freaked me out a little. Other than the belly button issue, everything looked good and she weighed 7 lbs, 8 oz. I told them that I was never concerned about the weight thing, I knew once she started eating everything would be more than fine. They underestimated how quickly I can fatten up a baby.
Now at almost 4 weeks Zuzu is doing fabulously – she eats, poops and sleeps like a champ. She still sneezes a lot and has since she was born and always more than once – her record is 6 times in a row. For the first week or so they were hysterical because the first one was a normal little baby sneeze and the second was just this short, big, forced noise, like “EH”. She has already stopped making this sound though, as well as the sound where she “hooted” in her sleep. Also she still hiccups quite a bit and has for the past few months.
Alison is doing fine. It took her a while to warm up to the baby. At first she was pretty cautious but would run and check on her when she cried. She also likes to watch her get sponge baths and is very interested in diaper changes – “there’s some yellow poopy in there”. Zuzu was home for over two weeks before Alison would actually touch her. One night while I was in the big chair with both girls, Ali ever so gently caressed the top of Zuzu’s head with her hand when she thought no one was looking – before this she had only touched her jammies. I even got a picture of them close together:
Since then Ali has been slightly more interested and even touches her occasionally.
Overall Ali has had an ok adjustment. I think all the attention from the grandparents has helped. She has been a bit whiny for Mama lately, so the true test will be when everybody leaves and it’s just the three of us here for most of the day. We’ll see.
